Although the pre-match talk was of Manchester Uniteds injury problems ahead of their European cup tie with Wolfsburg and the possible inclusion of David Gill’s son Oliver, they had no worries as they disposed of the German champions 1-3 thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Owen to make sure they claimed the top spot in Group B.
