There were seven ties in the Carling Cup tonight and 32 goals with the main surprise of the night being Wigan’s elimination at the hands of Championship Blackpool, a result which reportedly left Wigan manager Roberto Martinez fuming

Not only did Blackpool knock Wigan out but they did it in convincing style 4-1, Premiership boys Wigan obviously not fancying their night at the Bloomfield.
Bristol City were also the victims of a giant killing as League One Carlisle put them out 2-0 thanks to goals from Scott Dobie and Gary Madine.
However, the increasingly impressive Cardiff City side stayed steady and saw off their potential banana-skin by beating Bristol Rovers beating them 3-1, Michael Chopra scoring his eighth goal of the season to start the Bluebirds off.
Tottenham too also carried on their good league form into the Carling Cup by beating Doncaster 1-5 with want-away striker Roman Pavlyuchenko bagging the fifth.
Stoke had to go all the way to extra time to eliminate Leyton Orient 1-0 thanks to a rare goal from Dave Kitson.
Newcastle had a ding-dong battle with Huddersfield, the game ending 4-3 with Kevin Nolan sealing the game in the 84th minute. West Brom too had a scrap on their hands and only beat Rotherham 4-3 thanks to a winner from Simon Cox with only four minutes left of extra time.
