All the talk prior to the weekend and midweek games this week was, of course, about John Terry’s unsavoury antics off the pitch. Feminists, uninformed media types and non-football fans have vilified him, suggesting he should stand down as England captain yadda yadda yadda…yeah whatever: John Terry is an excellent defender, and is an integral part of any team he’s placed in, including our Team of the Week this week.
And he showed no signs of any inherent strain as he planted the winning header in the bottom corner of Brian Jenson’s goal against Burnley, and for that reason – a footballing reason, something that shouldn’t be overlooked in place of non-footballing deeds – he is the central figure in our thee-man defence.
He’s joined by Villa’s Carlos Cueller and Hull’s Steven Mouyokolo; the former due to his impressive right-back display and the latter due largely for his goal against Chelsea on Tuesday evening.
The midfield is bulked out with five players: on the flanks Stephen Hunt showed why Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was so eager to take him to Molineux by scoring against his team on Saturday, and Spurs’ David Bentley has prospered since Aaron Lennon got injured. His display on the right of midfield for Tottenham at Birmingham rolled back the years, and reminded everyone why he was once mentioned in the same breath as David Beckham.
Centrally, Tim Cahill’s winning goal at Wigan grants him his spot, while two players from the Man City versus Portsmouth game make the cut, with City’s Stephen Ireland and Pompey’s Kevin Prince Boetang coming in.
Up front we cannot ignore Wayne Rooney. His current form is electric, and he was pinnacle in United’s victory at The Emirates on Sunday.
Along side him is Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor, who netted a brace against Fulham at Craven Cottage, ending Villa’s four-match drought in front of goal.
